Dog lovers the world over know that the Rottwelier is a large muscular brown eyed dog that stands 22 to 27 inches at the shoulder and weighs anywhere from 85 to 130 pounds and is generally black or brown in color. He has a short coat and grooming is not a tedious affair. A good brushing once a week with a slicker brush will keep him glossy and shining. Get him used to brushing his teeth as a puppy and cut his nails regularly and you have a well groomed guard dog in your home. Here is a dog that is intelligent and protective towards it owner and they are bred in such a way that they become very versatile working dogs. There’s a little streak in them that makes them behave like a lapdog when with their owner. This breed forms a very integral part of the working group of the American Kennel Club and is trained to be basically guard dogs. They unfortunately acquired a reputation of being ferocious and dangerous due to the fact that some owners mistreated them. But if raised properly they are loving pets in a family and good guards as well. They need space to run around as they are very big and very powerful so if you have an apartment then either be prepared to take your dog out several times a day to burn excess energy or don’t get this breed as a pet. Like all intelligent beings, here too we have a very intelligent dog and they need something to do so that they are kept occupied like shooing pests from the garden for example. A rottweiler with a job to do is a happy rottweiler. A point to remember is that these dogs have to be trained from the puppy stage as they grow big and they grow big very fast. Love and patience will teach this breed anything as they are basically good learners and enjoy learning too. Puppy obedience classes will increase his social circle and give the required training as well. Rottweilers are frisky and as puppies they are not only already a size XL but they don’t know their own strength so a family with a toddler may want to wait till the kids are walking at least to avoid injuries. Be prepared to increase your shopping list to fit in your rottweiler’s nutrition demands as improper nutrition in the growing stages will cause them to have joint pains as they grow older. These are excellent guard dogs, too big to cuddle up to - you cannot possibly cuddle a 130 pound dog in your lap even though they have a heart made of marshmallows. But if the size is a deterrent then you may want to consider some other breed. |
